Frequently Asked Questions
How does this SIP calculator compute maturity returns?
This calculator uses the standard effective monthly compounding formula: first converting the annual expected return rate (R) into an effective monthly rate i = (1 + R/100)^(1/12) - 1, and then applying the annuity-due SIP maturity formula M = P × (((1 + i)^n - 1) / i) × (1 + i), where P is your monthly investment and n is the total number of months.
What is a Step-Up SIP and how does the "With step-up (yearly)" feature work?
A Step-Up SIP (or Top-Up SIP) lets you automatically increase your monthly contribution every year as your income grows. When you check With step-up (yearly) and set a raise between 1% and 100%, the calculator compounds your balance each month using s = (s + h) × (1 + i) and increases your monthly SIP amount at the end of every 12th month by h = h × (1 + StepUp/100).
How does the "With inflation (p.a)" feature work?
When you check the "With inflation (p.a)" box, the calculator adjusts your expected annual return rate for inflation using the Fisher Real Rate of Return equation: 1 + r_real = (1 + Return/100) / (1 + Inflation/100). It displays the exact purchasing-power erosion under Inflation impact and shows your real maturity corpus under Total value with inflation.
Why is the monthly return rate calculated as (1 + R)^(1/12) - 1 instead of R / 12?
Dividing a 12% annual return simply by 12 gives 1% per month, which when compounded over 12 months actually equals 12.68% per year — artificially inflating your projected corpus. Using (1 + 0.12)^(1/12) - 1 = 0.9489% per month ensures that 12 months of compounding produces an exact 12% annual return (CAGR).
What is the difference between SIP and Lumpsum investment modes?
In SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) mode, you invest a fixed amount every month over your chosen tenure. In Lumpsum mode, you invest the entire amount once at the beginning of Year 1 and let it compound annually across the entire period using Total Value = P × (1 + R/100)^Years.
What is a realistic inflation rate to use for long-term financial planning?
Long-term consumer inflation varies by region and economic cycle — typically averaging around 2% to 4% per year in developed markets and 4% to 7% per year in developing markets. You can customize the annual inflation rate anywhere from 0% to 25% to match your country and long-term purchasing-power goals.
Can I download my year-by-year growth schedule and inspect the growth graph?
Yes! Scroll down to the Year-by-Year Growth Projection table to click "Download CSV" and export your annual schedule. Right below the table, the interactive Wealth Growth Line Graph lets you hover or tap any year to compare your invested capital, estimated return, and total value.
Is this SIP and Lumpsum calculator completely free to use?
Yes, this tool is 100% free to use with unlimited use. There are no signups, logins, subscriptions, or usage restrictions of any kind.
